Introduction

On Wednesday, September 17, at 6:00 PM, the exhibition “…waaaater…” will open at the Gallery of Pärnu Concert Hall.

Exhibition authors: painter Pille Ernesaks and flutist-composer Monika Mattiesen.

At the opening, the world premiere of Monika Mattiesen’s composition “…waaaater…” will be performed: Monika Mattiesen and Leonora Palu on bass flutes, with Indrek Palu on electronics.

“…waaaater…” intertwines the sensory spaces of contemporary painting and new music. The abstract, free-form canvases of Pille Ernesaks, created in her own technique, and the electroacoustic soundscapes of Monika Mattiesen create an interdisciplinary environment that opens up new layers of perception, blurring the boundaries between the visible and the intangible.

"(...) Water shifts lines, dissolves forms, and carries away everything that once trusted in stability (...)
There was no distinction between surface and depth, light and shadow – water carried within itself both beginning and end at once – a current that never asked for direction, for water asks no permission.
Waaaater is the moment before return. The time when it still seems possible to hold on to balance, even though it does not truly exist.
Sound creates an invisible geometry. Vertically, it layers itself like water sinking into depth or rising to the surface. Horizontally, it spreads across the space. Thus, a soundscape is born – a structure of constantly changing shape that mirrors the inherent instability of water, adding an invisible dimension to the space, one that never stands still.”

The exhibition will be open from September until October 30, 2025.

Pille Ernesaks lives and works as a freelance artist in Tallinn. She studied choral conducting at the G. Ots Tallinn Music School and graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a degree in textile design. Over the years, she has worked as a television set designer, creating numerous studio designs, and later devoted herself fully to painting, experimenting with a variety of techniques and material combinations. Drawing inspiration from traditional crafts, she has also studied in Italy and Portugal. Ernesaks favors large-scale formats, spatial and frame-free canvases, and a conceptual approach. She is a member of the Estonian Painters’ Association and the Estonian Artists’ Association, regularly organizes solo exhibitions, and has received awards in public art competitions.

Flutist and composer Monika Mattiesen has gained recognition primarily as an interpreter and creator of contemporary and multimedia electroacoustic music, as well as an advocate for new works by Estonian composers. She is the founder and artistic director of the ensemble Küberstuudio and an active figure in the music scene. As a composer, Mattiesen has mainly written electroacoustic music, including Mandragora, which in 2007 was selected to represent Estonia at the International Rostrum of Composers in Portugal. In 2008, she composed the opera DMeeter on commission from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre; the opera premiered the same year at the Kanuti Gild Hall. For DMeeter, Mattiesen received the Estonian Cultural Endowment’s Music Endowment Award in 2008.
