On Wednesday, 26 August at 5 PM, an exhibition “EVERYDAY” by Liina Viira will open at the Pärnu Artists’ House gallery. You are warmly welcome!

Working from traditional motifs, one inevitably carries an awareness of the possibility of breaking established rules. While preserving traditions has an important and necessary role, experimenting with the new is equally indispensable. Perhaps there is also a small act of rebellion in it: why correct a grammatical mistake if the language itself is inventive?

For similar reasons, many people avoid making things by hand. They feel they lack the necessary skills, consider themselves uncreative, or fear doing something the wrong way, forgetting that experimentation is precisely how we learn about both the creative process and ourselves. Viira invites everyone to discover the world that unfolds through making, where we are able to (re)create both our surroundings and ourselves.

But does the everyday necessarily have to be modest? Liina Viira’s exhibition “EVERYDAY” encourages us to see ordinary life from a new
perspective. An object does not lose its practicality simply because it is visually striking, on the contrary, its decorations become like badge earned through use. Reserving beautiful objects only for special occasions reinforces the idea that everyday life is somehow less valuable. Yet it is precisely these ordinary moments that make up the greater part of our lives. The exhibition encourages us to consciously adorn our daily lives and to shape them with our own hands.

Liina Viira (b. 1980) is an Estonian artist born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. Twenty years ago she moved to Estonia to reconnect with her roots and has made it her home ever since. She founded her eponymous fashion label, which has been presented at numerous international exhibitions, and in 2010 received the Young Needle Award as part of Estonia’s prestigious Golden Needle fashion design awards. As a designer with Swedish-Estonian roots, questions of origin and identity have always been central to her practice and continue to drive her creative work today. Viira has expanded her artistic practice across different fields, experimenting with materials and techniques while creating sculptural interior objects.
