Programme:
Maarja Nuut. Song cycle "Liivast juukseid kammides" (Combing Hair from Sand)
"Liivast juukseid kammides" is a song cycle for vocal ensemble, percussion, violin, and electronics. While inspired by the poems of Eha Lättemäe, the work also features texts by Estonian poets Ilmar Laaban, Tõnis Vilu, Hasso Krull, and Mehis Heinsaar. This work weaves Estonian poetry, contemporary vocal music and experimental electronics into a seamless whole.
The development of this programme has been a long journey—first inward and then reflecting on the surroundings. I began composing in 2022, when the world was shaken by turbulent events, leaving me feeling as if I were in a vacuum. My existence felt fragmented and broken, which was mirrored in my musical sketches. I searched for a narrative, but for a long time, it felt as though my tongue had been cut out. Where should I focus when there is too much of everything? How should one be? How much should one feel? Then I discovered Eha Lättemäe’s texts, which opened a door to a unique world—a world that continues to create itself.
– Maarja Nuut
