Introduction

On Wednesday, March 25 at 5:00 PM, a solo exhibition by Rein Tääker titled “Modern Fairy Tales for Adults” will open at Pärnu City Gallery in Endla Theatre. You are warmly invited!

In this exhibition Rein Tääker brings together stories from fairy tales and everyday life. In the gallery you may encounter, for example, the Northern Frog after a total transformation, as well as Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian. You’ll learn why the Mona Lisa is smiling and much more. Well-known childhood tales have been given several contemporary twists, and ordinary episodes of modern life turn out to be almost storybook-like. Reality and fantasy merge, and how these stories ultimately unfold is for the audience to decide.

Rein Tääker (b. 1966) is an artist and graphic designer who mainly works in assemblage. He uses found materials to create three-dimensional works. Humor, wordplay, and responses to social events are important elements in Tääker’s work. He graduated from Tallinn University in 1992 in drawing, drafting and crafts, and has participated in exhibitions in Estonia and Finland.

In his first solo show “The Voice of Plastic” (Endla Theatre Gallery, 2010) he used advertising plastic as his material. The result was works that resemble oil paintings, but where texture is formed by layered pieces of plastic instead of brushstrokes. In the 2011 solo exhibition “The Voice of Money”, Tääker created works from kroon coins – a gesture marking farewell to the Estonian kroon before the introduction of the euro. The exhibition was shown at the Endla Theatre Gallery, Rakvere Theatre Gallery, Kuressaare Ajamaja Gallery and at the Estonian House in Helsinki.
