Introduction

Concert “Songs of Edith Piaf”

The program “Songs of Edith Piaf” introduces the timeless legacy of the Sparrow of Paris. The selection spans several decades, blending tales of love, melancholy, and vibrant joy. Her music, born of an extraordinary voice, still touches audiences with rare honesty and emotional depth. This evening unites Piaf’s dramatic life story with the allure of French chanson. Listeners are invited on a journey into the very soul of Paris.

Édith Piaf (1915–1963) was the brightest star of French chanson, her voice uniting fragile vulnerability with defiant strength.
From the streets of Paris she rose to the world’s great stages, always true to deep and heartfelt emotion.
Her songs speak of love, longing, and courage, still touching listeners today.
La Vie en rose, Non, je ne regrette rien, and Hymne à l’amour have become eternal parts of music’s soul.
In Piaf’s performances, light and shadow, joy and sorrow are intertwined.
She remains forever a symbol of the human spirit’s fragility and unyielding power.

Performers are Erkki Otsman (vocals), Allan Jakobi (accordion), Andranik Kechek (piano), Tanel Liiberg (double bass).

Erkki Otsman (vocal)is a member of the Paris-based association Les Amis d’Édith Piaf and a laureate of the singing competitions organized by the society. In 2012, he was chosen by fans as the French Song Artist of the Year. Otsman has performed on concert tours in several European countries, and his repertoire also includes works by Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel, Dalida, Yves Montand, Michel Legrand, and other great figures of French chanson. As a curious fact, in order to fully capture the spirit of Piaf, he performed together with accordionist Allan Jakobi on the streets of Paris’ Latin Quarter.

Andranik Kechek (piano) is an Armenian-Estonian musician and a graduate of the Yerevan Conservatory. In Estonia, he has taught for many years at the Georg Ots Music School and the Tallinn Ballet School. Kechek is an accomplished concert pianist whose performances range from classical to popular repertoire. He has also composed songs, piano pieces, and music for the film Lernavan.

Allan Jakobi (accordion) is one of the finest accordionists of his generation. His repertoire is very broad and diverse, as are the concert tours and ensembles with which he has performed. Recently, he has been giving concerts with Trio Naturale and cellist Andreas Lend.

Tanel Liiberg (counter bass) has worked with various jazz and pop ensembles. Among others, notable collaborations include Bombillaz and the Jaak Lutsoja Trio.
