A tribute to Arvo Pärt

Hortus Musicus

Artistic director Andres Mustonen

Programme:

Pärt, Sylvestrov, Kancheli

In the anniversary year of Arvo Pärt, his music can be heard in churches and concert halls around the world. The ensemble Hortus Musicus also pays tribute to the composer, having long been both his close friend and creative partner. The musical meetings between Andres Mustonen and Arvo Pärt began even before the founding of Hortus Musicus, at St. Olav’s Church, where the first encounters between these strong personalities and early music took place.

Pärt composed his first tintinnabuli-style works for his closest circle of friends and like-minded musicians, among them Hortus Musicus. Soon after developing his unique tintinnabuli-style, he dedicated several works to the ensemble and its artistic director, Andres Mustonen: Fratres, An den Wassern zu Babel saßen wir und weinten, and Arbos. His final composition, La Sindone, was likewise dedicated to Andres Mustonen.

In addition to Pärt’s works, the concert will also feature compositions by his contemporaries, friends, and fellow composers Valentyn Sylvestrov and Gia Kancheli.
