Cyrillus Kreek in Jazz

Anett Tamm (vocals)

Jaak Sooäär (guitar)

Taavo Remmel (bass)

This concert features songs from Cyrillus Kreek's books of sacred folk melodies, enhanced by the jazz trio's improvisations. Cyrillus Kreek's arrangements of Estonian folk melodies for mixed choir, with their Nordic crisp and clear sound, rich harmonic nuances, are quite similar to contemporary Northern European jazz music influenced by folk traditions.

Guitarist Jaak Sooäär has also performed this music with the chamber choir Collegium Musicale, conducted by Endrik Üksvärav. The collaboration resulted in the 2023 with an album release, "Cyrillus Kreek. Sacred Folk Tunes" (ERP). This powerful experience sparked the idea of translating Kreek's folk song arrangements into the language of improvisational chamber jazz.

For today´s concert Sooäär has brought together Anett Tamm, a rising star in the Estonian jazz scene, and Taavo Remmel, a legendary double bass player who is comfortable in various musical styles.
