Quintessence Revisited
Janno Bergmann

Exhibition designer: Pamela Sume
Supported by: Estonian Cultural Endowment and City of Pärnu
Opening: Friday, 15 August, at 18:00

Quintessence Revisited
The exhibition can be seen as a visual-poetic-philosophical journey in search of the fifth element, and at the same time, a selective retrospective of the artist’s creative path spanning nearly three decades. It expresses an attempt to touch an elusive wonder, at times groping in pitch darkness, then again in blinding light. In seeking immateriality within material reality, the artist stumbles into portals in the rigid yet flexible wall of actuality. Doing so without looking back — until this moment.

Janno Bergmann was born in 1975 in Pärnu, Estonia. He began his art studies in 1994 at the Art Department of Pärnu Sütevaka High School of Humanities and has been active in the art field since 1996.

He has expressed his creativity through various media, including painting, printmaking, performance art, video art, conceptual art, sculpture, installation art, and photography. In his personal projects, he explores themes of art, culture, and communication, reinterpreting myths of contemporary art history and seeking poetic imagery in visual art.

Janno Bergmann is a founding member of the performance art group Non Grata. From 2000 to 2001, he worked in New York as an assistant to Ilya Kabakov. Since 2009, he has been associated with the artists' collective Art Container. He is a recipient of the Pärnu Art Annual Award (2013). Since 2014, he has worked as a freelance curator, and from 2017 to 2023, he coordinated the Copper Leg Art Residency.
